FNM 5-17

I went 3-2-0. It was cool, except the part where i forgot i took a claritin earlier in the day (i know it doesn’t do anything for me), then broke down and bought the medicine the works for me (allegra d, even though i hate buying it because i just get the worst looks from the pharmacists), and took it without thinking of the medicine i had already taken and ended up in antihistamine purgatory. i worked through it.

I began feeling terrible match one.

0-2 against a bant deck, with voice of resurgence. don’t play cards during their turn. just don’t.

i ate chipotle during this match, then sucked down a rootbeer. then ate altoids mints so i wasn’t the worst.

2-0 against an aristrocrats deck with aggressive creatures. she couldn’t get the mana to play the right things the first game, and the second game she didn’t have enough things to play.

it was during the second match they handed out the boosters just for entering. the first featured 4 cluestones, but had a foil debt to the deathless. forgettable rares. the foil debt to the deathless makes me want to make a 3d card out of it.

2-1 against a banty deck. close fun games.

this is around the time i stopped feeling super shitty.

2-1 against another banty deck. this guy was a super serious guy that didn’t look like he has enjoyed magic in a while. hatefully playing games whilst jaded is one way to go about it.

1-2 against an aggressive black red deck. i just lost too much life too fast to wrath stuff away properly, nevermind drawing a sphinx’s revelation. one game was really funny because he was waiting for me just to get to 5 life, and i was at 6, and had run out of all of the silly ways to hold his creatures back (azorius charm and feeling of dread), and chump blocked his boros reckoner with a spirit token that took me to 5, then he just played burn spells to murder me.

i ended up 10th place out of 28, and was at 7th just before game 5, which was really cool. the shop prized out to 16, giving me a pack. more cluestones, and i don’t remember the rare.

there’s a cash tournament tomorrow, and a lot of the people i played against are playing tomorrow. unfortunately, it’s early. fortunately it’s free. so if i lose, i didn’t gamble it, and if i win, then it’s free money. except you know. but insert odb quoute here if you feel so obliged to so.

i cannot wait until the next cycle to draft.

FNM

i went 2-2-1.

Is there anyone worse to play than the person with headphones in, listening to music? Besides the person who drops without saying so, giving you 50 minutes to kill? I won’t be returning to this particular store.

GPOY.

My girlfriend is making me get another pair of jeans. I’m thinking of back to Naked & Famous Black Power Stretch. Or another pair of APCs if I can try on the fit of whatever is skinnier than the Petits. New Cures? They don’t make them in black though. bummmmmer

i went 2-3-0 in FNM with a further evolution of the deck from last week (an esper deck), which is my best record yet. This week’s store was smaller than the last one I went to, but made up for it with incredibly friendly people playing a variety of different decks I haven’t played against, with solid, even, match ups.

Anecdote: I asked the shop owner if he had any Lingering Souls. He did not. Someone had overheard me asking for the Lingering Souls and said he could help me out, and then told me to find him after my transaction. I found him, and he asked me if I had any trades. I did not, as I had traded every last unused rare recently. He asked if I had any cash for trades. I did not. So, this guy told me he was just going to sell them to the shop to sell to me and he’ll just take store credit. HOW NICE IS THAT?

I went 1-2-0 in Dragon’s Maze prerelease. Dragon’s Maze is making me really excited for M14 and the next block. I can’t wait until Modern Masters to draft again. I dropped out at 4:20AM. Draft format for this block seems to go so slow!

Friday Night Magic

This Friday I played a modified version of what i played last week. I went 1-5, with three matches going to the third round, losing two of those. Whenever I played a control heavy deck, I was out controlled. Having a counter countered is so silly but trying to bluff an opponent is so fun.

The new place I went to costs $7, but you get two boosters for just playing, and of those, your choice between what’s in the current block.

So, about two months ago I got back into Magic: The Gathering, after about 14 years of not playing. I’ve been frequenting local game shops for their magic events, and though I haven’t been doing so well, I’ve been learning a lot, and above all, having a good time and fun.

i played a miracles deck last night and went 0-2-1, with yet another bye. it was more fun and more competitive than the control/mill deck i played the week before, that yielded me the same results, 0-2-1, and a bye. It’s always the first match that gets the draw, then the next two are losses, then the bye. I can’t wait to break this cycle, even if it’s all losses. As well, I’d rather play and lose than have a bye. It’s so annoying to have a bye at the end of the rounds.

I’ve been going to different stores and experiencing the different cultures and metagames at each of them. Last night I played nothing but control decks, either with milling on the side or burn on the side, everyone had a trade binder and everyone used spindown dice. The week before, more so creature decks (only one mill deck), no one had a trade binder, and everyone wrote down the score.

There’s so much more going into a Magic game now than I remember during Mirage/Tempest/Urza’s Saga, and it’s a lot more fun because of it.
